“A Historic Meeting"
As presidential assistant for public liaison during President Carter’s administration. Midge Constanza served as a link between the President and a wide range of groups, many of which had limited access to the White House. Among the first group to meet with Constanza was a delegation of gay and lesbian leaders, making it the first meeting between a presidential administration and an openly-gay citizens group. The meeting took place March 26, 1977.
Among Costanza’s invited guests were 14 leaders, including the co-executive directors of the National Gay Task Force, Jean O’Leary and Bruce Voeller, as well as Frank Kameny, Elaine Noble, Reverend Troy Perry and others.
This proved to be a bold move, since Anita Bryant’s homophobic “Save Our Children” campaign was in full cry.
