“Gertrude Stein in Richmond"

Author Gertrude Stein’s stop in Richmond, Virginia was midway through her American tour. She arrived by automobile on February 5, 1935 in time for a dinner party at the home of author Ellen Glasgow.  Others in attendance included James Branch Cabell, Carl Van Vechten, Mark Lutz and Hunter Stagg.

The next day, Stein gave an evening lecture at Cannon Memorial Chapel at the University of Richmond, titled, “What is English Literature.”

On the afternoon of February 7, Stein, Toklas and Van Vechten visited the Poe Shrine and attended a tea given by the Board of Directors of the Poe Foundation in her honor.  Van Vechten photographed her visit, the most dramatic photo taken in the Enchanted Garden, with Stein standing next to the fountain with icicles to the ground.

Her next stop was the College of William and Mary.
