What was James Levine good at, you might ask? Opera, and Mahler. Goodbye, James. Let’s listen to some funeral music from Mahler, conducted by Levine.

We open tonight with a rare organ piece. I wish I knew more organ music but most of it is from the Baroque period and I just don’t know much about that.

Tonight is a sort of grab bag from different eras and different temperaments. I wonder what Mahler would think of Bryars? Or Bruckner of Mahler?

Our finale is Mahler’s finale to his glorious Ninth Symphony, conducted by the late James Levine. Seek out the entire symphony some time…
