The Church of the Ecstatic presents:

Paradise Killer and Rina Sawayama have me in an 80’s/citypop mood – which in itself is kinda what Rina’s singing against in Tokyo Love Hotel, what with Westerners latching onto Japanese places and iconography as aesthetic props, like they’re wont to do. Whoops 😮

The thing is, the aesthetics – whether it’s images of rainy streets with neon lights, or songs with dreamy synths, and drums with reverb – are more universal than just one time or place.

Maybe when people feel nostalgia for “places they’ve never been,” it’s because our own memories aren’t as far away from others’ as we think.
