Open Source RVA presents:
BANG A GONG! On Friday’s Open Source RVA, heard at noon on WRIR 97.3 FM, I welcome Peni Candra Rini, the renowned Javanese singer and composer. Dr. Rini is in Richmond this Spring as a Fulbright Artist Scholar, and is visiting Artistic Director for Gamelan Raga Kusuma, a community ensemble that performs traditional Indonesian music. The famed Sindhen and Kronos Quartet collaborator talks about being a female artist in a male dominated society, and about how Richmonders can join her twice a week in regular Gamelan rehearsals during her stay. Andy Mcgraw, Associate Professor of Music at University of Richmond, and co-founder of Gamelan Raga Kusuma, also joins us. THEN Dina Weinstein has a wide-ranging discussion with activist Keisha Cummings, the director of 2Love, an organization that advocates for underserved, adversely-impacted youth and communities. She tells us about her work in trying to quell youth violence, and talks about the recent shooting death of 22-year-old DeAndre Broidy, among other topics. TRY OUR SPECIAL SOURCE! Open Source RVA, Friday at noon on WRIR 97.3 FM and wrir.org.
