It’s always a little bit odd when a WRIR fund drive happens in the middle of a presidential election campaign — it seems to suck up everybody’s bandwidth. In 2016, it’s even worse. This year’s campaign reminds me of those videos of 12-foot trucks trying to drive under an 11′-8″ bridge: you know in advance what’s going to happen, collateral damage will be involved, you’re powerless to stop it from occurring. And as uncomfortable as it makes you feel, it’s hard to take your eyes off of it.

So I’m writing to remind you that, as addictive as inevitable crackups can be, there are some important things you can control. And one of them is making sure that, come November 9 and the months and years beyond, you and the rest of the people in your community have a radio station reflecting your interests and values, not ones imposed on you by the powerful interests that control most all of America’s media outlets.
That radio station makes its time and facilities available to anyone in the community who wants to get their message, viewpoint and taste out to the public. It invites and welcomes all comers, it provides opportunities for growth and learning, it opens the listeners’ ears and minds to new ideas and expressions that might change their life. It operates without need for financial profit — its motive is the greater good, not personal or private benefit. In short, it amplifies the best features of your community.
And you don’t even have to will it into existence. All you need to do is donate whatever you can afford. That will help keep WRIR on the air so it can keep doing what it’s been doing for your community for the last 12 years. There are three easy ways you can contribute:
- By visiting our secure online sites at https://www.wrir.org/renew (for a one-time donation) or https://www.wrir.org/renew (for a monthly recurring contribution)
- By calling 804-622-9747
- Or by visiting us in person at 1621-B W. Broad Street (2nd floor)
Thank you for your support, and long live Richmond Independent Radio!
