On Friday’s homespun edition of Open Source RVA, heard at noon on WRIR 97.3 FM, Don Harrison welcomes back author and friend-of-the-show Dale Brumfield to talk about his brand new book, “Closing the Slaughterhouse: The Inside Story of Death Penalty Abolition in Virginia.” The former field director for Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (VADP) talks about Virginia’s sad and sordid history of legal execution, andthe and the successful campaign to end the practice. He also previews his latest feature article for Richmond magazine on the state of Virginia’s dysfunctional mental health system. We also present a rebroadcast of Dina Weinstein’s interview with Diane Maiese of Dive RVA.   The first black diver to win a college national championship, Matese talks about the state of Richmond Parks and Recreation’s public pools and the details behind her aquatics organization’s vaunted swimsuit drive.
