Cause and Effect presents:
The early nineties were a special time in hip-hop. The genre had finally come into it’s own and was starting to be recognized as it deserved to be, thanks to the likes of Dr. Dre and others who pushed production and quality music into a space the public was more aware of.
But this show is about the other stuff. More underground. FU-Schnickens, Das Efx, and the like. These guys were doing really interesting things just outside of what was fast becoming hip-hop’s main big top tent event space. And where did it come from? And where did it go? We’ll tell you!
From listening to the earliest roots of hip-hop with stuff like Sugar Hill Gang, we’ll see how we can clearly draw creative lines, especially in terms of style and subject matter, to say: Leaders of the New School or LL Cool J.
And the mark left on hip-hop from this era is significant too. We’ll explore how in today’s vastly different musical landscape, we can still see traces of the early nineties tradition is Childish Gambino, Kanye West, and even Common.
We’ll talk rappers who are actors, geography in rap (NYC to Chi-town!) and much more. And we’ll hear some GOOD, I mean REALLY solid stuff. Today’s show was as fun to make as it is to listen to, and we just hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
