Francosonic presents:

Left: Charlemagne, medieval King of the Franks who brought educational reform to francophone regions. Right: France Gall, who sang “Who had this crazy idea one day to invent school? That darned Charlemagne!”

This week’s music theme is Back to School (la Rentrée, as we call it in French!)

Take heart, kids, everyone’s summer is coming to an end. In France, the first day back is Monday, September 3. Students in other European francophone countries return as late as the following week. In French-speaking countries like Burkina Faso, faculty return in September, but students have until October 1 to prepare for a new school year.

And now, in the spirit of learning…

On a recent show I mentioned a couple of language-learning programs that have good reviews. If you can’t visit a francophone country to learn, these are good bets:

Apps & software:
– Duolingo (app you can use on your phone, good for all levels)
– Rosetta Stone (full software program with great results, especially for beginners)
– Pimsleur, Berlitz (both software programs / CDs, especially popular among beginners & those who want to learn for travel purposes)

Video chat-based, one-on-one programs:

– iTalki (this one came highly recommended to me by a college professor of Spanish who wanted to learn another language)
– Talk Abroad (great for students, this connects you with a trained language partner who can help early intermediate level & above)
– Lingoda (haven’t used this one, just saw it advertised on WordReference.com, an online dictionary I use)

Bonne rentrée et soyez sages, les enfants !
(Happy back-to-school, and be good, kids!)
