“Michael Sutphin Welcomed to Town Council in Blacksburg, Virginia"

Election Day in November 2011 was successful for Michael Stuphin, who was elected to the Blacksburg Town Council. That made him the first openly-gay candidate to be elected in the state outside of Northern Virginia.  Originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, Stuphin graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006.
His 2009 election bid was unsuccessful, but during the two years between elections he gained valuable experience serving on the long-range planning commission and the housing board.  He plans to focus on economic development, neighborhood preservation, and Blackburg Middle School’s master plan.
During the election, Sutphin identified himself as gay in an interview on Virginia Tech’s student station, WUVT.  In campaign materials he also noted his service on the board of directors of Equality Virginia, the state’s leading LGBT rights advocacy group.
