“A Documentary About Bayard Rustin’s Life"

The documentary, Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, was first broadcast on January 20, 2003 on PBS. Produced and directed by Nancy Kates and Bennett Singer, Brother Outsider contains rare archival footage covering all aspects of Rustin’s life.   They range from his early years growing up in West Chester, Pennsylvania and his time as a conscientious objector during World War II, to his mentorship to Martin Luther King Jr., and role as architect of the 1963 March on Washington. Ultimately, Rustin had to work behind the scenes in the movement because
he was open about being gay.
Eighty-four minutes in length, Brother Outsider has received over 25 awards.
2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of Rustin’s birth and a renewed interest in the documentary.
More tomorrow.
