“My Maggie"
In early 2012, the work of pioneering feminist artist Joan Snyder was put on display at the Harnett Museum of Art on the University of Richmond campus. Her exhibit of 60 pieces was titled, “Dancing With the Dark: Joan Snyder Prints 1963 – 2012.
One of several autobiographical pieces was titled, “My Maggie.” Created in 2000, this color lithograph and etching on paper is based on a work she had made as a gift and tribute to her partner, Maggie Cammer, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their meeting. Here, various words are written and crossed out to symbolize the challenges lesbians face when representing themselves socially and legally. Prominent at the bottom are the words, “My Maggie.”
