Welcome to a special edition of the Lost Music Saloon. I’m airing a one-hour radio special today: ‘Rodriguez: Searching For Sugar Man’. It’s about the strange, true story of Sixto Rodriguez, a singer out of Detroit who put out a couple of albums back in the early 1970’s that promptly went nowhere here in the United States, and Rodriguez slid from public view to a life of manual labor. Somehow, however, he became a star on par with Elvis, Dylan and the Rolling Stones in South Africa. But Rodriguez never knew about his foreign fame, and he was rumored to be dead among his fans in South Africa. That situation remained static for many years until some fans decided to try and track him down…and found him! A documentary has been filmed about the story (‘Searching For Sugar Man’), which is the subject of the one-hour Radio Special I’m bringing your way today. Why? Because Sixto Rodriguez passed away last week.
I’ll also be taking note of another recent passing: Robbie Robertson of The Band fame, plus his own solo career.
Finally, I’m giving away tickets to see Cracker perform on Brown’s Island here in Richmond this coming Saturday, August 19th.
