Banji Kaicho back in full programming and delighted to announce this year’s artist spotlight lineup. We’ll begin the series with a special show on modern shakuhachi No. 1 – Minoru Muraoka (1924-2014)

Miyazaki-born, Tozan school-trained, and under early guidance of folk singer Tansui Kikuchi, Muraoka was capable of switching playing styles with ease, yet his over 150 recordings proved he wanted not only preserving, but also revolutionizing this traditional Japanese instrument. His New Dimension Group really pushed the boundaries of Gagaku, Minyo, Free Jazz, Folk & Psych and remain as triumphs from so many hot 70s fusion experiments.
