My partner has a saying that goes something like “The Efficient is the enemy of the Good,” and that sort of applies to my feelings right now. In the midst of corporations buying up everything smaller than them, and then cancelling the shows, laying off the workers, and shuttering the studios that made the things that made them worth buying.. yeah, I’m mad.
It’s happening in all facets of life, but this week it’s been rough in the video game world, with Microsoft and Bethesda shutting down studios like Arkane Austin, and Tango Gameworks, layoffs in a lot of big companies, and IGN buying Eurogamer and Rock Paper Shotgun and then declaring writers and editors ‘redundant’ (even ALICE BELL!!)
Nobody’s happy about any of it, except perhaps the people making the spreadsheets.
Anything to save a buck? But why collect all these jewels for your crown, only to smash them to pieces? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE.
