Cause and Effect presents:

The one, the only, HEART, led by sisters and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Ann and Nancy Wilson, are the first women in music to lead, write and play instruments for a chart-topping rock band. Heart has sold more than 35 million records that include hits like “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” and “Barracuda” to name a few. Today DJ Miss Kitty delves into the musical influences that inspired and motivated the Wilson sisters, the grit they exhibited in navigating and succeeding in a competitive and male-dominated industry and their legacy to rock and roll and soulful gut-wrenching vocals.

In an interview with Women’s Business Journal, Ann Wilson was asked about her inspiration and her legacy: “There’s little doubt you helped pave the way for lots of women in Rock and music in general. Who do you think helped pave the way for you?”

AW: I stand on the shoulders of all women who went before me but they wouldn’t necessarily all be musicians. Gloria Steinem, Ann Richards and women of the generations that came right before me were big inspirations. Of the musicians, I’d say Janis Joplin was the biggest influence. She just went out there and didn’t have to be supermodel glamorous. She didn’t have to follow the rules set by the music industry in the past for women. I love that kind of liberation.

“What do you want your personal and professional legacies to be?”

AW: Professionally, I’d like to have it be that, like Janis, I didn’t have to adhere to an image that was assigned to me by the music industry. I just came in and was absolutely myself so that everybody could see that, not just women. It takes two to tango on this planet, you know? I think anybody who has the guts to go in and challenge the status quo is great for all.
