Voices Of Recovery presents:

Voices Of RecoveryVoices Of Recovery

Broadcast Thursdays at 1:29 and 2:39 in the afternoon on WRIR 97.3 Richmond, Va.

“Voices of Recovery” is a radio show documenting the struggles and triumphs of individuals with mental illness.  Each one minute episode highlights a notable individual who experienced mental illness and found a path to recovery. Recovery from mental illness is the process of moving beyond the limitations the illness may cause, and finding renewed purpose, meaning and satisfaction in life.  There remains considerable stigma associated with having a mental illness.  This show challenges those stigmas and celebrates individual triumph.

The readers for the show are individuals who have experienced mental illness in their own lives.  Their courage, commitment to educating others, and their profound sense of hope are the soul of this show.  We are fortunate to be able to give them an opportunity to share their voices with radio listeners.

War News Radio presents:

War News Radio

Swarthmore College | Monday 1:30 – 2pm

icon

War News Radio is an award-winning production of Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Penn.

Coverage of war and politics can quickly devolve into a haze of statistics, strategies, and expert predictions. Lost are the completely real effects policy decisions have on real people around the world.

War News Radio tries to rediscover the voices of real people. The show fills the gaps in the media’s coverage by airing new perspectives, both personal and historical, in a balanced and in-depth manner. The show’s producers hope their broadcasts will engage listeners and inspire them to engage critically with the rest of the world.

Beyond its journalistic goals, however, War News Radio also serves as an educational tool. Since its founding in early 2005, dozens of students have participated in the production of War News Radio, gaining a deeper understanding of international affairs and passing that knowledge on to their peers.

Mental Health Matters presents:

Mental Health MattersMental Health Matters

Gail Moskowitz, LCSW | Mondays 1 – 1:30pm

icon

Mental Health Matters is a weekly radio program hosted by Gail Moskowitz and dedicated to Mental Health, interpersonal relations, addiction, sex and sexuality, and discussing healthy ways in which to live a more thoughtful and emotionally honest and fulfilling life. Every week you, the listeners, have the opportunity to ask questions or weigh in on the subject.

Psychological issues are as complex as they are misunderstood.  On one hand most of us have had issues that are emotional in nature, blind spots, and confusions; have experienced sadness or depression, anxiety or panic, peer pressure, loss and the list goes on and on.   Yet we underfund mental health programs, have morally confused notions of how to make our pain go away and judge others for their behavior.

My Topic is  Part 2 of:

"Why in 2011 in the United States of America are our Most Vulnerable Citizens Homeless?"

The statistics are striking and sad, estimates range from 25% to 45% of the more than 700,000 people who are homeless on any given night, have a serious mental illness. One out of 50—or about 1.5 million—American children are homeless each year, according to a 2009 study by the National Center on Family Homelessness

My guest is Robin Gahan, MSW

“Prom Queen"

At first they taunted and called her names, even writing on her locker. But then the seniors at McFatter Technical High School in Florida elected 17-year-old Andrew Viveros their 2011 Prom Queen.
Known as Andii and born male, she had publicly presented herself as female for the past two years. She plans to change her name to Andrea sometime in the future.
Running against 14 contestants, she was shocked when they called her name.  Some students were against her running, but with the support of her parents and a new school principal who encouraged her not back down, she accepted the crown while wearing her royal blue evening gown.
Her parents, Oscar and Bernadette, now view Andrew as a straight female and remember their trip to Disney World when the much younger Andrew wanted to try on Cinderella’s dress.

A Grain Of Sand presents:

A Grain of SandA Grain Of Sand

Charles McGuigan

icon

My show’s title comes from the William Blake line about how you can see the entire world in a grain of sand. I believe that. Always have. There’s something consubstantial about all things, human and otherwise. Some spark of the Other within all. And I know that ordinary sounds and vernacular speech hold the very truths of existence, you’ve just gotta be patient and plough through dung hills for those rare gems.

All stories of merit—not simple anecdotes—contain hints of the universal. And I’ll go anywhere for a story and listen to anyone, and I do believe these stories exist everywhere and with everyone. I’ve heard it said that not everyone has a story. I just don’t believe that.  Sometimes it’s hard to extract that story. Sometimes the teller has a hard time framing their own story. But the story’s there nonetheless. Even those who have lived the most solitary of existences.
