Today I’m doing a bit of an origin story, reflecting on albums that live rent-free in my brain. That’s a weird way of saying I’m making a playlist of my favorite albums, excluding anything before 1997 because if we dig into vinyl this playlist would be 10+ hours long. These are albums that set standards for me and introduced me to new genres and styles. Maybe we share some favorites?

Back in 2013 I started a Tumblr blog called EXT SOURCE, with a loose focus on dark bass music and black and white images. This show is a continuation of the blog but today I’m going back to the spirit of my blog with a selection of cathartic heavy bass-focused beats, halftime and dubstep. Back in 2022 I released my first solo picture book Off The Wall, inspired by my love of street art and murals. I said long ago that it was Jet Set Radio in picture book form. To celebrate the release I made a small playlist of songs that I called an “unofficial” soundtrack.
This episode of EXT SRC will be an expansion of that playlist, featuring a selection of colorful instrumental hip-hop hearkening back to my high school and college days, plus some newer music that fits the bill.

As a teenager I shunned smooth jazz and always gravitated to more chaotic, energetic jazz like fusion of free. But as I get older I notice myself enjoying more mellow tunes. A few years ago I put together a mix of tracks that fit this bill for my stepdad. This selection of tracks is inspired by that mix.
