What Wakes Me Up 7 Dawn Flores and Jack Johnson on Colfax Massacre presents:
What Wakes Me Up once again is the continuing threat and actuality of censorship to uphold the racist tendencies of our culture and government, at all levels.
Spent some time in Studio Jay at WRIR with a delightful couple who’d just returned from a trip south to learn about one of the sad moments in our history, the Colfax Massacre.
Dawn Flores is an artist and educator, and I’d point you to Dawn Flores.com to explore her massive body of work, and see how she turns history, science and culture into Art.
Jack R. Johnson is also a historian and author whose recent book entitled In Black and White will be released soon. His work has appeared in journals, periodicals and blogs, and his Hidden Histories was part of the line up here on WRIR for years. He’s currently delving into the Colfax Massacre for his next historical fiction project. He and Dawn just returned from a fact finding mission to the site, and joined me in the studio to debrief and cocreate this episode of What Wakes Me Up.
Our theme music is Woke Up by Song Rise. New Orleans native Jon Batiste reworked the Battle Hymn of the Republic and this piece is called Freedom. If you’re not dancing, then get up and get started. Laissez les bon temps rouler, oui, Cher, de Nacodoches à Thibodaux à Vicksburg.
